Pep Guardiola's Barcelona project nearing completion

The tactician has accomplished in three short years what many take a lifetime to achieve, but there's still more to do for the philosophical coach.

For those who still politely decline to accept that Pep Guardiola’s Dream Team are the best footballing club side in the history of the game, Barcelona’s domineering 3-1 win over Manchester United in the 2010-11 Champions League final on Saturday night should go some way to confirming its status as one of the greatest of all time.

There should be little argument, however, that Guardiola is now one of the most successful coaches/managers in club football, if not then certainly the most prolific in terms of trophies-per-year ratio.

In his first three seasons, Pep has picked up 10 trophies. To put it into perspective, one of Real Madrid’s greatest coaches Miguel Munoz lifted 15 titles in 15 years. Barca’s equivalent Johan Cruyff won 11 in eight years at Camp Nou; Bob Paisley boasted 19 in nine years with Liverpool; Jose Mourinho claimed 17 in 10 years with several different clubs; while Sir Alex Ferguson has amassed 36 pieces of silverware in 24 long years at Manchester United.

Unlike Ferguson or Paisley or Munoz, Pep does not have the intention to remain at Camp Nou for decades to create a dynasty. By the summer of 2012, he will reach the four-year anniversary – the norm in Spanish football nowadays if you are ridiculously successful – and it is almost certain that he will leave his beloved Catalan club for the time being.

In that 12 months, there’s still a lot for Guardiola to do to cement his legacy at Barca.

Monday MLS Breakdown: Core to blame as rebuilding Toronto FC suffers a humiliating home loss

Toronto FC must address its concerns through the spine of its team as it attempts to move forward from Saturday's 6-2 defeat to Philadelphia at BMO Field.

The sixth goal proved too much to bear for a section of beleaguered and tormented Toronto FC fans on Saturday afternoon.

Those jaded supporters erupted in applause when Philadelphia forward Danny Mwanga accepted a slide-rule pass from Justin Mapp and tucked home his second goal of the day to conclude TFC's embarrassing 6-2 home defeat to the Union.

TFC coach Aron Winter labeled the disaster a “bad, bad performance” in its aftermath, but that assessment does not adequately quantify the level of incompetence on display from the home side for much of this game.

Fundamental errors prompted Union attacking forays time and time again. Those mistakes ran the gamut from coaching decisions (omitting usual defensive lynchpin Adrian Cann for fatigue and form concerns) to individual missteps (ill-advised decisions, missed marks and poor passes) to systemic issues (no defensive shape and little ability to build from back to front) across the course of a display that one can only hope ranks as the worst showing a MLS team offers this season.

Such an inept afternoon – particularly in the wake of some mildly encouraging results in the early stages of the campaign – inevitably raises questions about the direction of the overall project.

Is it fair to do so? Every team has bad days here and there. Those disappointing games are part and parcel of playing a long, grueling season with extensive travel demands and small squads.

Official: Ivan Perisic joins Borussia Dortmund from Club Brugge

Belgian league player of the year joins German champions on a five-year contract.

Borussia Dortmund has completed the signing of Ivan Perisic from Club Brugge.

A statement on Dortmund's official website revealed that the 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal. The player's release fee was not revealed, but is estimated to be in the region of 5 million euros.

Perisic enjoyed a superb season for Brugge, and his tally of 22 goals scored led the Belgian Pro League. He spent most of the season as a left forward and occasionally as a central playmaker, but Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc believes that the Croatia international is in many ways similar to Michael Ballack.

"[Perisic] is a guy like Michael Ballack, only much faster than the [Bayer] Leverkusen player. He can play in a standard 4-2-3-1 on the left or central behind the striker. Perisic has the advantage that he can play deep and bring the ball out," Zorc told Kicker.

Perisic could therefore provide competition for fellow newcomer Ilkay Gundogan to fill the void in defensive midfield with the departure of Nuri Sahin for Real Madrid. In addition, the Croat will compete with attacking midfielders Shinji Kagawa, Kevin Grosskreutz, and Mario Gotze.

Perisic will be Dortmund's fourth signing for the 2011-12 season. Thus far, the Bundesliga champions have announced the signatures of Gundogan from Nurnberg, as well as Chemnitz's Chris Lowe and winter signing Moritz Leitner, who returns from his loan spell at Augsburg.

Bayern Muenchen Doing Sergio Aguero Pursuit

After Sergio "Kun" Aguero expressed a desire to leave Atletico Madrid, Europe's big clubs lining up in droves direct signatures that Argentine striker.
After Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus, Bayern Munich has also helped to enliven the hunt for youth 22 years of it, so reported by the U.S.
German giant that had to settle for an end to the Bundesliga in the 2010/11 rating it intends to seek a replacement three veteran striker Miroslav Klose, who likely will go, and Ivica Olic who is familiar with the injury.
Actually Aguero has just signed a new contract with Los Colchoneros last January, but it included a decrease of buy-out clause to be 45 million.
The smallest figure is down on paper is only valid for a bid from another Spanish club, but Atletico seem to be hitting the average price for all interested teams because they did not bring Aguero cheaply.
Bayern himself had tried to bring Aguero from Independiente in 2006. Unfortunately, the player would prefer to join the camp Vicente Calderon with a value of 23 million.
